The Century family celebrates the first 100 years of Philips audio
- Five new products will be launched as part of the celebratory Philips Audio Century Series including two turntable based all-in-one systems, a new DAB/FM portable radio and two new headphone models – with all due to be available in September.
- Named The Tina (Philips V9000) – is the world’s most powerful, all-in-one integrated turntable system offering 120W RMS power and including both DAB+/FM tuner and streaming functionality.
- The Stevie: (Philips V3000) – is an entry level integrated turntable system.
- The Janet (Philips V2000) – is a Portable Radio with DAB+/FM.
- The Freddie Philips (SHP9500CY) – is a retro styled, open backed, over-ear wired headphone.
- The Ringo (Philips H2000) – is a retro styled, compact & light weight on-ear headphone.
- Sustainability plays a key role with all the Century products – recycled plastics and plastic free packaging are used in the range.
TP Vision is launching the Philips Century range of five audio products each designed to celebrate the brand’s role as a true pioneer in the world of audio for over a century.
Philips was one of the key brands to facilitate the commercialisation of consumer radio in the 1920’s, being instrumental in the development of essential components such as the introduction of the Miniwatt Radio Tube – and including the launch of the first Pentode tube in 1925, still beloved by audiophiles to this day.
The first Philips branded radio – the type 2501- followed shortly afterwards, with the company going on to launch groundbreaking radios throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s before launching the legendary Philetta series in the 1950’s – models that remain avidly in demand from collectors to this day.
In fact, Philips Audio has been at the forefront of audio technology throughout its history, including making key innovations in the world of vinyl, plus the launch of the compact cassette, the introduction of the CD, more radio development with DAB and the launch of DVD & SACD. Philips Audio was also one of the very first companies to offer consumers an internet connected, streaming hi-fi system.
It’s almost impossible to celebrate all of the many influential audio developments that the Philips brand has made in the past 100 years, so the new Century range focuses on key product areas including vinyl, CD, radio and headphones.
The Tina – complete flexibility, compact size and serious sound
While the new The Tina manages to combine a turntable, DAB+/FM tuner, USB audio and BT streaming all into a convenient, relatively compact body, much effort has been taken to ensure that sound performance is high-quality, warm and large scale.
The Tina is the World’s most powerful all-in-one, integrated turntable hi-fi system, offering 120 Watts rms into a 2.1configuration featuring two full range speakers plus a dedicated 4” bass reflex subwoofer – all with independent digital sound, treble and bass control. Music fans can also choose to listen via their favourite wired headphones using the full-size 6.3mm headphone socket.
Components are high quality with a solid aluminium diecast platter, extruded aluminium straight arm – with an adjustable counterweight – and a replaceable Audio Technica MM cartridge.
Much consideration has also been given to the design of the internal anti-vibration mechanism to protect the turntable from even the smallest external or internal vibration.
Alternative sources of music are the DAB+/FM tuner, USB Playback and RCA Aux audio-in.
The app enabled The Tina can also stream music via BT 5.3 with Auracast and compatibility with both the SBC and LC3 codecs.
The system can also be expanded for a wider sound stage by adding external BT speakers via the BT out facility.
App based control also makes the The Tina easy to access and operate.
The Stevie – My first all-in-one turntable system… or an easy return to vinyl
The Stevie all-in-one system makes a perfect starting point for vinyl curious consumers or old-time vinyl fans wanting an easy return to the format.
The three-speed, belt driven turntable features the replaceable Audio Technica MM cartridge while the system features digital sound control and 12W RMS power output into two full range, bass reflex speakers.
Alternative audio options include streaming via Bluetooth 5.4, with compatibility for both the SBC and LC3 codecs, and audio-in for connection to mobile music players. Consumers can also listen with wired headphones via the 3.5mm connector.
The sound stage can also be expanded by adding external Bluetooth speakers via the Stevie’s BT out facility.
The Stevie is also app enabled.
The Janet – high quality portable radio
The Janet is a stylish, compact DAB+ & FM radio measuring 180mmX100mmX60mm (wxhxd) to make high-quality audio easily portable from room to room.
Despite its compact size, the The Janet’s sound is warm, big and clear thanks to a 5W rms power output and a relatively large 2.5” full-range driver.
Operation is easy thanks to a large control knob and touch sensitive buttons – including 20 radio presets – plus a bright 2.4” colour TFT display.
Listeners can also stream from their mobile device using Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity with compatibility for both SBC and AAC codecs.
The Janet can also be used as an alarm clock with a sleep timer and two alarms.
The internal battery offers a generous 16-hour playback and can be fully charged in 3.5 hours.
As with all Century products, the The Janet’s construction has a significant content of recycled plastics and is supplied in plastic free packaging. For additional sustainability, the battery can be easily replaced.
The Freddie – Over-ear, wired headphones
The Freddie is the latest member of a popular club, as Philips Audio’s large format, open back wired headphones have always had and continue to have an impressive following of enthusiastic owners.
The open-back design confirms that the The Freddie is designed for home use and in combination with the large 50mm neodymium drivers, the delivery is a hugely enjoyable, wide spacious and expansive sound.
The Freddie also focuses on durability and comfort. Quality materials are used throughout, with a strong steel head band with a double layered cushion. The ear cushion material is also breathable to ensure long listening sessions remain comfortable.
For maximum convenience, the The Freddie includes a 3.0M detachable connection cable.
The Ringo – the original ultra-portable headphone in a modern execution – roller-skates not included!
The concept of truly portable, personal audio took-off in the 1980’s and much of the corresponding success can be claimed by the lightweight and compact headphone design.
The Ringo takes the ’80s iconic headphone design and adds a modern twist including wireless connectivity and sustainability, including the use of PCR plastics.
Available in three colours – Deep Black, Crystal Teal and Silk White – The Ringo includes an easily adjustable headband and two sets of spare ear-cushions.
The retro design hides a thoroughly modern specification including 40mm drivers, wireless multipoint connectivity via Bluetooth 5.4 and 20-hours playback with a quick charge facility giving an extra six-hours in just 15 minutes.
Call reception is also crystal clear thanks to the inclusion of an AI mic and The Ringo is also compatible with the Philips Headphones app.
