Berlin, August 31, 2017 – TP Vision has consistently proven its commitment to continuous innovation for the Philips TV brand. The company has pioneered many of the key developments in the Smart TV arena including the introduction of the Android TV OS and will consider the implementation of all new technologies where its in-house expertise can lead to a significant performance improvement and bring innovations that are truly useful for consumers.
Google Assistant built-in
Typical of this philosophy is the introduction of the Google Assistant to Philips Android TVs. The Google Assistant will be able to help Philips TV users with various task e.g., help to easily find the content they like including their favourite movies and shows from Netflix* or YouTube, or get the information they need such as weather forecasts or the latest news from main media outlets, or even control other smart devices like Philips Hue lamps.
( *Netflix streaming membership required.)
All that the user will need to do is press the mic button on the TV remote control, ask a question and the Google Assistant will take it from there. It can even show photos of your cat** or sing happy birthday for you.
(**cat and other photos need to be stored in Google Photos cloud storage. Just say “show me photos of my cat”)
The Google Assistant will be available on 2017 Philips Android TVs after they receive the software update to the Nougat version of the operating system – forecast to begin in the fall of 2017. On Philips Android TVs which do not come with a remote control with the built-in microphone, The Assistant will be available via a mobile app from Google called Android TV Remote.
The Google Assistant will launch on the Android TV platform initially supporting the English language version with selected other European languages following on***.
(*** exact rollout timing and availability of given languages is dependent on Google)
New AmbiSmart app for smartphones
The AmbiSmart app will allow users to interact with Ambilight in a fun and easy way eg. change Ambilight colours or the modes in which it operates. Users can: Individually assign different colours to each side of Ambilight, toggle between Video, Audio and Colour modes, choose different operation for each mode e.g. immersive setting in Video mode, Change brightness and saturation of the Ambilight effect. Design their own Colour mode pre-set by selecting colours for each Ambilight side and saving them to a new profile.
The app offers also “virtual remote control” functionality which allows the control of the majority of the TV functions via your smartphone.
The app will be released for Android Smartphones in September 2017. iOS version will be released afterwards. The AmbiSmart app is targeted at the 2017 range Ambilight TVs and later.
Ambilight
Philips unique Ambilight system uses rows of LEDs mounted on the rear of the set to create a coloured halo of light on the wall behind the TV. The colours continually change to precisely match the on-screen content, effectively extending the images beyond the boundaries of the set to create the impression of a much larger image and to provide a more overall immersive and enjoyable viewing experience.
Android TV
Android TV is an operating system from Google, offers thousands of movies, shows, and games from Google Play, YouTube and your favourite apps. Personalized recommendations mean more time being entertained and less time hunting for something good. With Chromecast built-in, you can easily cast movies, shows and photos from your Android or iOS device to your TV.
