Amsterdam, September 4th, 2014 – Today, TP Vision presented a Philips Media Player that will solve one of the big challenges of the 4K UHD era – the availability of content. The Philips UHD 880 will allow receiving HEVC encoded content over the internet and watch it on Philips UHD TVs at the best possible picture quality. The Android L-based UHD 880 will be compatible with all 2013* and 2014 Philips UHD TVs. The Media Player is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2015 in Europe and Russia at a suggested retail price of 249 EUR. The UHD 880 will be made available for free in Q1 2015 to consumers that will have purchased a 2014 Philips UHD TV in the 8809,8909 curved, 9109 and 9809 series.
More 4K UHD content for Philips UHD TVs
The Philips UHD 880 will open up a new world of content for users. 4K UHD content that is encoded with HEVC (high-efficiency video coding) will be brought to all Philips UHD TVs via the Media Player. The video compression standard is already used by most well-known online video service providers to stream 4K content to their customers**.
Great content combined with great connectivity
The new Philips Media Player will be able to receive HEVC encoded videos via Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB. An HDMI 2.0 connection between the media player and Philips UHD TVs allows 4K UHD content to be displayed at up to 60 frames per second***.
Based on Android L
The Philips UHD 880 will have Google’s upcoming operating system, Android L, integrated and will bring the full Android L experience to all connected Philips UHD TVs. It will be upgradable to support any new HEVC video streaming offerings from video service providers that are developed for the Android platform.
* 2013 9708 series only 4k non copy protected and copy protected content up to HDCP 1.4, 4k HDMI input up to 30 frames per second.
